On January 20, 1984, Walter John Come III (Ben) was born in Concord, NH, the son of Robin Suzanne Thornton and Walter John Come Junior. Ben was taken home to siblings, Brent Ryan Thornton and Christine Victoria Come, for whom he became a devoted and loyal brother.
Ben loved baseball, soccer, and cross country. He won coaches awards from Pittsfield Middle High School, because he was full of determination and worked hard to succeed. His first job was at Twin M local grocery store. In 2002, Ben graduated from PMHS, and he welcomed a son, Dillan Blaise, the following spring.
He served six years in the Navy where superior officers praised him for his "invaluable expertise, well roundedness, innovativeness, and determination". He was considered "a versatile and highly skilled technician who consistently achieves outstanding results in any task assigned." He appreciated travelling the world on The USS San Jacinto but more cherished the friendships he made with his fellow seamen. He was honorably discharged in 2008.
After the loss of his sister, Christine, in 2009, a daughter, Josephine Kelsie, was born in 2010. He cherished his time with his daughter.
After the Navy, Ben worked briefly for a company, Corfin, out of Salem, NH. He then settled into a career as a medical tubing machinist at Elektrisola, where he remained until 2019.
Ben became a father again in 2019 with the birth of a son, James. He lost his father the following year.
Ben always said he enjoyed the company of children and animals over that of adults. His beloved pets over the years included dogs, Licorice and Eve, and his favorite cats, Apollo and Willy Nelson.
Ben recognized the goodness in life, and he appreciated the simple things. He was honest, decisive and loyal to those he loved. He could always be counted on for stories* and very rational advice. His friends described him as a special person who always went above and beyond to be a good human with a kind heart, a true friend, and a gentleman.
Ben studied the game of pool like a scholar and made many friends playing at tournaments across New England. He helped get his team, The Blazing Saddles, to nationals in Las Vegas. He won trophies and tournaments, but mostly made friends on and off the pool table (and in the parking lot). He will be remembered by his pool family for his kind heart, sarcastic jokes, quick wit, strong shot, big mouth and even bigger beard.
Ben appreciated television and music and could always be counted on to recommend the perfect song or show, especially if it sent a message.
Ben made careful, calculated choices, and chose to spend his last three years loving Erica Kowalski. He was also devoted to his mother, making sure she was always cared for.
Ben struggled immensely at times, overcoming many challenges. In true Ben fashion, he left this earth on his own terms on Tuesday, May 31st, 2022.
So many people will miss this stubborn, loyal, and judicious man.
Church services will be at Advent Christian Church on Main St. in Pittsfield this Friday, June 10th at 5PM. There will be an opportunity for those who wish to speak at the service, which will be followed by a gathering at the Pit Road Lounge in Concord, where a pool tournament just might pop up.
To honor Ben's wishes, burial will be at sea at a later date.
