ALLENSTOWN- Retired Pembroke Police Chief Scott James Lane, 62, of Allenstown, passed away at home surrounded by his family after years of battling Lewy Body Dementia on Tuesday, May 17, 2022. A lifelong resident of the area, Scott was the son of James A. Lane of Grafton, MA and the late Jacquelyn (Morey) Lane formerly of Allenstown. He was a graduate of Pembroke Academy Class of 1978, he went on to attend Granite State College receiving his undergraduate degree and later earned his Master's Degree from the University of New Hampshire. Scott's law enforcement career began with his appointment as a part-time patrol officer for the Town of Allenstown on August 26, 1985. He matriculated to the Pembroke Police Department where he would remain for the next 26 years, being promoted to Sergeant on March 24, 1996, to Lieutenant on August 1, 1998 and lastly rising to the rank of Police Chief on September 1, 2006 carrying that role until his retirement in 2011.During his time at PPD he was the first DARE officer for the town. He was a certified OHRV Operator and instructor and truly enjoyed his backcountry patrol. He served for a time as the Firearms instructor for his department. Scott was a member of the NH Police Association, serving as secretary for a time and the NH Chiefs of Police Association. Following his retirement, Scott taught Criminal Justice at Concord High School in the CRTC program for five years. His last years of employment were spent as Director of Security for New England College. Scott was a good friend to the Pembroke Fire Department and spent a brief time as a trainee learning about fire service. Scott enjoyed the time he spent serving as an Assistant Boy Scout Master for Troop #270 in Pembroke where he devoted hundreds of hours alongside his son Mason seeing him through from Wolf to Eagle Scout. Scott was also one of the founding members of CREW 556, a scouting, shooting venture crew. Scouting was a true pleasure and joy to Scott as he helped shape the lives of youth in the Troop and Crew. Scott was a true friend and advisor to many people throughout his life, he had the kind demeanor that people were naturally drawn to. An avid outdoorsman, Scott enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, skiing, camping trips and traveling. He was a proud member of the 4,000 Footers Club of New Hampshire, having hiked all of the 48 4,000+ foot mountains in NH, as well as many in Maine including Mt. Katahdin and the knife's edge. Scott's first love was his family. Besides his father, Scott is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Carol (Ballou) Lane of Allenstown; two sons, Robert M. DeGrave and his wife Becky and Mason J. Lane and his wife Kaylee all of Pembroke; his grandson, Larry DeGrave and two sisters, Terri Hebert and her husband Glen of Warwick, RI and Dawn Martel and her husband Scott and their children, Morgan, Elizabeth and Sam Martel of Grafton, MA. A Celebration of Scott's Life and service to his community will be held on Thursday, May 26th at 6 P.M. at The Pembroke Academy Auditorium, 209 Academy Road in Pembroke.
