Obituary

In Memory of Phyllis Allen Shepard 12/28/1928 - 3/20/2022 Born December 28th, 1928 in Providence, RI. Third child of Lena Holman Allen and Horace Raymond Allen. Preceded in death by older siblings Dr. Frank Allen, M.D. of Wolfeboro, N.H. and Barbara Haskell of Tuftonboro, N. H. and husband Robert L. Shepard of Oak Ridge, TN. Children: David Shepard of Oak Ridge, TN and Sarah Peveglio of Chichester, NH. Phyllis was an active musician from a young age and as a teenager fronted a jazz band playing Vibraphone ( Vibes ). She attened Lasalle Jr. Collge and recieved a degree in Music in Organ Performance. She then went on to attend Oberlin College in Cleveland, OH. where she performed in the Robert Shaw Chorale. She met her husband Robert Lane Shepard in the Chorus at Oberlin and they were married on June 16, 1951 in Melvin Village, NH. Robert and Phyllis lived in Cleveland, OH. while he pursued and received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Physics from Oberlin College. He then went on to work at Union Carbide in Greenville, SC. and later Oak Ridge, TN. Phyllis was very active in music and music education while living in Oak Ridge and directed the Oak Ridge Chapter of Sweet Adolines for many years. She was a ORFF method certified music instructor and taught generations of students from her studio at the family home. Robert and Phyllis both directed the choir of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church for many years and performed on a weekly basis at church services throughout that time. Phyllis formed a Renaissance and Baroque recorder performance group called "The Shepard's Pipes" that still exists in the Oak Ridge/Knoxville, TN. area to this day. In addition to their more formal musical endeavors friends and family have fond memories of their Sunday night music group that embraced all who wanted to attend. Phyllis spent many happy summers and the later years of her life living on Lake Winnipesaukee, NH. After several years in care she passed away on March 20th, 2022 at the age of 94. She will be missed by her many friends and family. In lieu of flowers please donate to Music Education or Animal Rescue groups in your area.
