PITTSFIELD - Peter Joseph Cummings, 69, of Pittsfield passed away at Elliot Hospital on Monday, July 24th, 2023 after a courageous three year battle with colon cancer. He was born in Hanover, NH on July 26th, 1953, son of the late Dr. William and Alice (Barrett) Cummings. Peter grew up in West Lebanon until moving to West Springfield, MA in 1963. He was a 1971 graduate of West Springfield High School. Peter went on to attend the Rochester Institute of Technology. Peter was known for his love of cooking and his family. He was notorious for making recipes his own that he especially loved to share during the holidays and family gatherings. He worked in food service in various restaurants and hospitals across Massachusetts and New Hampshire. That love of cooking brought him together with wife, Linda, when introduced by a mutual friend while working as a cook. Peter and Linda married in 1985 and were married for 38 years at the time of his death. In 1996, Peter and his family moved to Colebrook where they lived for 24 years. While living in the North Country, he continued to embrace outdoor hobbies that he enjoyed including golfing and skiing. He was a member of the Men's Golf League at the Colebrook Country Club and a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Peter also enjoyed traveling with his family, his favorite trips being annual vacations to the Maine Coast in Pine Point and Scarborough. While living in Colebrook, Peter worked at the Coos County House of Corrections and further his education in the criminal justice field. He was a 2005 Summa Cum Laude graduate of Granite State College with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice. Peter and his wife moved to Pittsfield in 2020 to live closer to family. While living in Pittsfield, he continued to pursue his hobbies as his health allowed and was employed by the United States Postal Service. Peter was predeceased by his father, Dr. Cummings in 2010; his mother, Alice in 2012; father in law, Raymond Lanctot in 2014; and brother in law, Robert Samble earlier this year. Peter is survived by his wife, Linda; His two sons, Gerard Cummings Sr. and his wife, Melissa of Maple Grove, MN; and Colonel Stephan Cummings, and his wife, Chrystal of Seminole, FL; daughter, Gabrielle Doucet, and her husband Benjamin of Pittsfield; grandchildren, Hayley Cummings, Callie Zuniga, and her husband Anthony, Sheridan Cummings, Emily Bero, Casey Nelms, Gerard Cummings Jr., and Alice Doucet; as well as great-grandson Mercer Zuniga; his four siblings, Carol Ryerson and her husband, Gary of Clarks Summit, PA; Robert Cummings and his wife, Candy of Webster, MA; Christopher Cummings and his wife Alison of Windham, VT; and Steven Cummings and wife Katherine of Spofford, NH; mother in law Bibiane Lanctot of Coaticook, Quebec, Canada; sister in law, Carol Samble of Longmeadow, MA; along with numerous nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on August 12th at 10am at Christ the King Parish in Concord.
