Karl E. Merrill, 90, of Chichester, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 23, 2024. Karl was born on May 19, 1934 in Loudon, NH to the late Frank and Lottie (Wheeler) Merrill.
Karl grew up on the family farm in Loudon. Karl attended the White's one room schoolhouse in Loudon then Pittsfield High School. He and his brother Joe joined the Marine Corps in 1953 and served during the Korean War and achieved the rank of Sargeant. After the Marines he worked various jobs and had his own Rubbish Removal Business, Drilling and Blasting, and Dug graves. He then started in construction working for Joe Rogers in Pittsfield, L.K. Ladd in Loudon, and in addition to working his construction job he operating his own dairy farm milking up to 70 cows, and then F.L. Merrill Construction retiring at the age of 75. His hobbies were sawing lumber on his sawmill, gardening, puttering around his home in Chichester. He was often seen driving around the neighborhood in his golf cart giving the great grandchildren rides. After the passing of his dog "Tux" he befriended the neighbor's dog "Bob" and called him "Helicopter Bob". He cooked T-bone steaks for Bob. He loved to cook his own recipes and filled his freezers with it.
Karl is survived by his wife: Elinor (Greene) Merrill; his son: Frank Merrill and his wife Susan; his daughter: Karla Brown and her husband Brett; his three step-sons: Leon Sargent and his wife Deborah, Royce Sargent, Lloyd Sargent and his wife Elizabeth; his eleven grandchildren: Kara Girard, Bradley Merrill , Jason Brown, Kyle Brown, Nathaniel Jones, Julie Sargent, Lynn Sargent, Lucille Sargent, Lloyd Sargent Jr., Marie Larson, Joseph Sargent; his eleven great grandchildren: Jacob, Alyvia, Kassidy, Karleigh, Conor, Collin, Benjamin, Levi, Charlotte, Jason, Avery; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Karl is predeceased by his four brothers: Paul, Joseph, David and Richard Merrill; his three sisters: Elsie Fife, Elizabeth Weston, Jennie Brooks; and his two grandchildren: Jennifer Ahearn and Jessica Taylor.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, August 29, 2024 at Roan Family Funeral Home – Still Oaks Chapel, 1217 Suncook Valley Highway, Epsom from 10am – 12pm. A graveside service with military honors will follow at the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen at 1pm. There will be a Celebration of Life following the graveside service.
