Obituary

PEMBROKE, NH- Mr. George J. Stafford, 75, of Pembroke, NH, passed away at the Elliot Hospital surrounded by his family on April 25, 2025 after a period of declining health. Born in Morristown, NJ, George was the son of the late George F. Stafford and mother, Edna (Griffin) Stafford who survives him. He was raised in Wharton, NJ. George was a graduate of Morris Hills Regional High School in Rockaway, NJ and Transylvania University in Lexington KY where he earned a BA in Political Science. He resided in Wharton New Jersey for most of his life before moving to Pembroke, NH in 2022 to be closer to his daughter and family. Prior to his retirement, George was most recently employed by the NJ Highlands Coalition. In earlier years, George began his professional career employed at Thatcher Glass. Soon after, he became a sales executive at the Daily Advance. George was then elected as Town Councilman in Wharton NJ from 1976-1987. After serving as Councilman, he worked for assemblyman and then Senator Gordon MacInnes. George worked as an advertising sales representative for radio stations WNNJ/WIXL & WMTR/WDHA and owned and operated Stafford Advertising. In the following years, George served as the Tax Commissioner for the Morris County Board of Taxation, as videographer for "The Daley News" and director of production for "Video on the Go". Until 2010, George also worked as an agency manager at the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission in Morristown and Randolph. George liked participating in pick-up basketball games at the outdoor Denville courts. He coached the St. Mary's Church CYO basketball team and played for Thatcher Glass on the Industrial League team. He eventually earned his titanium knee by a fast break flagrant foul situation. He loved driving to small rural golf courses in Pennsylvania with friends to play golf. George was also a lifelong reader and learner of all things history, a compelling storyteller, and passionate political columnist for local newspapers. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Paula J. (Pekarovich) Stafford of Wharton NJ & Pembroke, NH; his mother Edna (Griffin) Stafford (99), his children, daughter Tara J. DeTore (Stafford) and her husband Charles DeTore of Chester, NH and son George P. Stafford of Emeryville, CA; his sisters, Pat Stafford and her husband Richard Pereira of Morristown, NJ and Eileen Burnash and her husband Jim Burnash of Basking Ridge, NJ; and his beloved granddaughters, Abby and Amelia DeTore. He is predeceased by niece Sarah Karr and survived by nieces Kathryn and Megan and nephews Bjorn and Daniel. George is also survived by innumerable cherished friends. A Memorial Gathering will be held on Saturday, May 3rd from 3 P.M to 5 P.M. in The Roan Family Funeral Home, 167 Main St. in Pembroke, NH.
