Betty Louise Fischer Walker, just shy of her 96th birthday, passed from this world to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ on Monday, April 14, 2025, at her home with multiple family members by her bedside. Betty was married to her childhood love, Kenneth Walker, Jr. for nearly 75 years. He passed just nine days before Betty.
Betty grew up in Brockton, Massachusetts, to her parents, Hobart and Gladys (Whiting) Fischer. The firstborn of three girls, Nancy (Lowrey) and Carol (Tonkin), predeceased their sister by several years.
Betty attended and graduated from the University of Massachusetts in Newton with a degree in Social Services. Later in life, she took additional courses in Education at UNH. Betty worked as a substitute teacher until a full-time teaching position at Epsom Central School opened up. "Mrs. Walker" taught all the young children in the town, many of whom remember her as a powerful and influential personality in their lives.
Betty Louise, or Betty Lou as her parents called her, was an adorably beautiful child; she was stopped on the street by strangers who would exclaim her beauty and sweet personality. At 9 years old, she would meet her husband-to-be at White Lake State Park in Tamworth, NH. During the annual vacations, her parents from Massachusetts and his parents from Concord, NH, camped and became friends, ensuring the bond between their young children. Over the years, Betty and Ken exchanged letters back and forth, which ultimately led to courtship and marriage. They had three daughters, one each year: Cheryl Ann (Dan Palmer/Peter Burgess), Dale (Thom Wormhood/Tom Turyn), and Linda Jean (Doug Yeaton), with multiple grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Both of our parents loved family and hosted cookouts, swimming/wedding/bridal/baby/graduation parties, as well as baptisms in the pool. Everyone was welcome at the Walkers, especially on a sunny summer weekend. The family and grandkids referred to their grandmother as "Mam-ma", which the school kids tried to get away with, as did the Sunday School kids, for which they were firmly corrected.
Another family favorite event, started by Mam-ma and Boompa, was gathering all of the family for a camping weekend, the 3rd weekend in September, just before the Deerfield Fair. Betty would not miss the fair. Each year, the campers, tents, and family members all spent a wonderful weekend together, despite the often cold, snowy, and rainy weather. Hiking Pine Mountain, dipping into the frigid Peabody River, singing campfire songs, and playing musical instruments (kazoo, mouth harp), annual Egg-Offs to see who fry the perfect, unbroken egg, and finally ending with the traditional spaghetti dinner.
Betty had a beautiful, high soprano voice, singing and teaching patriotic songs to her school students, and singing in the Epsom Baptist Church. She also sang the role of Mother Superior in the Sound of Music with the Pittsfield Players.
She retired at the same time her husband did, and they drove their truck over the Al-Can Highway to Alaska, when the road was still dirt and you had to replace your windshield due to the rocks flying up. They went a second time and then proceeded down the West Coast, visiting family and friends along the way.
Both Betty and Ken have a long-standing passion for aviation, and thus volunteered at Sun and Fun, an airshow held every April in Lakeland, FL. Mom's role was to dispatch the "Refuse Raiders," and Dad was the tractor driver with his group of men. Their job was to pick up the trash throughout the airfield, interacting with the airshow participants and onlookers. Oshkosh, Wisconsin, home to the World's Largest Airshow, was also on the annual list of trips and vacations. They volunteered there by greeting the pilots as they landed. Betty and Ken made lasting friendships throughout the United States of America.
A full life lived in Christ's path. Sharing the gift of life with friends and family.
Our love is stronger now than ever, and we'll love each til eternity.
