Obituary

Center Barnstead – Alson (Al) Smith, 72, of Center Barnstead, passed away peacefully following a short period of health complications, on Thursday, August 21, 2025, surrounded by family. Al, son of the late Alson E and Ruth (Dodge) Smith, was born on September 12, 1952, in Winchester, MA. Growing up, Al and his family spent summers at Suncook Lake in Center Barnstead, NH. The lake became the setting for some of his cherished memories, including meeting Sharon (Austin) in the seventh grade. Al and Sharon later spent 50 wonderful years of marriage together, raising two children, Matthew and Justin. At a young age, Al started building a very successful career at Paul K. Guillow, Inc., a company that made toy balsa wood airplanes and model kits. Al was employed there for over 50 years and retired at the age of 60 as company president. During his time off, Al enjoyed golfing, bowling and traveling. In retirement, Al could be found puttering around the yard, boating on the lake and spending time with his growing family. Besides his parents, Al was predeceased by a grandson, Justin Joseph Hartford, and niece Kelly Austin. Al is survived by his loving wife, Sharon (Austin) Smith; children, Matthew Smith and his wife Jennifer of Wilmington, MA; Justin Smith and his wife Rachel of Dallastown, PA; grandchildren Matthew Jr., Mason, Tyler, Hunter, Jade and Haley; brother in law, Brian Austin and his wife Lynda; sister in law Linda Haney and her husband William "Buddy"; niece and nephews Brian Jr., Jared, Britney and Riley. There are no services scheduled at this time. A Celebration of his Life will be held at a later date.
